This illustrated lecture traces the inspiration and development of the porcelain collection formed by Jessie and Sigmund Katz of Covington, Louisiana. Throughout the 1940s and ‘50s, the couple sought examples of the earliest porcelain made in England, particularly by factories at Chelsea, Bow, and Longton Hall. Beginning in the 1950s, a series of early gifts to the Museum of Art of the Rhode Island School of Design was followed by more extensive donations to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The shift to Boston was inspired after seeing earlier gifts to the MFA of English porcelain from Richard Cushing Paine. The Katzes realized that the combination of their collection with Paine’s would create “a most formidable assembly,” which would have few rivals. Changes to the U. S. tax code in 1954 extending the benefits of charitable donations to art museums further cemented their commitment. The result is gifts made between 1952 and 1988 of more than 1,400 pieces of English porcelain. Today Boston’s collection is widely regarded as among the finest outside Great Britain. On the other hand, we know relatively little about the lives of Jessie and Sigmund. Correspondence between the Katzes and curators in Providence and Boston brings many of these objects to life while providing a better understanding of their lives and their collection.
